I faced the same probem. In fact, you can use an ipod to computer transfer program to help.I personally use Cucusoft iPad/iPhone/iPod to Computer Transfer.It helps me to transfer my songs/videos/photos/playlists etc from ipod back to my computer iTunes directly and safely.It works well for me,you can give it a try.

Wow, that sounds like me all over again! I had that happen to me too and I used a program to restore all that was on my ipod. I forgot the name right now but let me get back to you when I remember! Gimme a few mins!

Happened 3 years ago so I’m busy wracking my brain here trying to remember the app lol.

You will need to recover the data using something like asoftech recovery.

I’ve had to use it many times in the past but it will require that you plug that drive into another system as an external drive and run the software from there. It will rebuild the drive and hopefully recover the files.

Sorry. At the first hint of HDD failure, you should have backed up all you data. If you have an adapter(USB) you can try the freezer method. Seal HDD in a ziplock bag(remove all the air you can). Place in freezer for no more than 30 minutes. If you’re lucky you take it out and plug it into the drive adapter and it may run for 5-10 minutes. Dump all your data onto a larger(and hopefully fast) drive. It doesn’t always work but to have a company recover it can cost hundreds and thousands of dollars! Good Luck! =

"Is there a way to tell if its physical or logistical damage?" If a surface test fails, it’s physical. Heat can cause physical damage.

"Is there a cheap way to see if I can recover the data" If the drive failed, the only way to recover the data – and there’s no guarantee – is in a lab with a scanning electron microscope. And the only way that could be called cheap is if you consider Bill Gates to be poor. (There are houses that sell for less in the US in nice suburban areas.)

You could try running ddrescue http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/ddrescue.html on it, but don’t hold your breath (aside from the fact that it could take days – even weeks – you probably won’t recover much.)

(The freezer trick only works for certain failure modes. I suspect that you have flaking platters – which nothing will fix.)

Well , most of the free registry cleaners do one of the following :
1. clean only a defined number of errors on a time ( 10 at a time for example ) , so you need to repeat the scan many times ( I used to have this with winaso and then i got the full version that do all the job at once).
2. other types of registry cleaners clean only specific types of errors on the free version and you need to buy the full version to remove the more dangerous files.

so I always recommend to try a software first , then if you are convinced with the results you get you can buy the full version .
